About

Students in the Civil Engineering program within The David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich University are studying the Dog River. The River start in Roxbury Vermont high atop Warren Mountain road and meanders along Rt. 12 until it meets the Winooski River in Montpelier Vermont. In 2011 Hurrican Irene caused havoc on the river changing its landscape and killing off fish. The mountain river corridor is home to a few farms that are possible polluters. With a passion for fishing our group has come up with the idea of studying water quality along the dog river and determine if there are any pollutants along the way. We plan on collecting multiple data points along the river and mapping the water quality of the river.

Project

Our teams project is to test water quality along the Dog River from the headwater to Winooski intersection. Starting on Warren mountain in Roxbury, we will take initial readings from the source of the river. This will give us a good idea about how clean the source of the Dog River is. From there, we will travel downstream stopping periodically to gather test results from various high pollutant areas. Some of these areas include but are not limited to, Roxbury center, Northfield center, Northfield Wastewater treatment plant, a number of farms located on Route 12, and finally the Winooski junction. After collecting water samples at these potentially high pollutant areas, the necessary experiments will be conducted, and results will be gathered and summarized.
